Urea is also produced naturally by the skin and is part of the essential Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) which regulates skin’s moisture content. Urea is hygroscopic, which means it is able to bind moisture into the outermost layer of skin, thus relieves itching and roughness, helping to fight dry skin symptoms. It is also keratolytic, meaning it improves natural exfoliation and soothes and smoothes the skin’s surface. As a substance produced naturally by the skin, Urea is well-tolerated even by dry and sensitive skin. Because all of these effects and very good study data, Urea is the gold standard in treating of dry skin.*

NMFs are a variety of water soluable compounds like amino acids, Urea and Lactic Acid which naturally occur in the stratum corneum (outer layer of the epidermis). They increase the water-binding capacity of the skin, keeping it well hydrated.
Ceramides are important lipids in the hydrolipid film (which protects the external layers of skin). Produced naturally in healthy skin, they strengthen the skin barrier, helping to prevent moisture loss due to evaporation and keeping out irritants that can cause inflammation and itching. When skin’s Ceramide levels fall the skin barrier is impaired. Skin can start to lose water and become dry and irritated.
Eucerin uses synthetic Ceramides that are biologically-identical and that enhance skin’s natural barrier – locking in moisture and preventing dryness and irritation.

Why do I need to moisturize my skin?
Skin is one of our most important protective barriers. It defends the body from external influences such as pollution, UV light and chemicals. These factors can also cause damage to the skin barrier and, when this happens, skin’s capacity to retain moisture is compromised. As a result, it becomes prone to dryness and irritation. It’s important that we care for our skin so that it, in turn, can carry on its vital work of protecting us.
Why do I need a special moisturizer for dry, rough skin?
A moisturiser specially formulated for very dry and rough skin should be rich in the ingredients that skin needs to prevent moisture loss, bind in more water and strengthen its protective barrier. Left untreated or treated with a product that doesn’t contain the appropriate ingredients, skin might dry out further, and may crack.
A moisturiser such as Eucerin’s UreaRepair PLUS 5% Urea Body Cream contains Ceramide (to repair the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss) and Urea and other NMFs (to bind water into the skin). The formula gives immediate relief and delays the symptoms of very dry skin (such as roughness and scaliness) for up to 48 hours.
How can I tell if I have very dry skin or a skin condition or disease?
You can find information about dry skin as well as conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis on this website. If you are still unsure, or concerned about your symptoms, we recommend you ask a pharmacist or dermatologist for advice.
